IT students go underground at Iron Mountain

Our students went underground—220 feet under the Butler, PA countryside to be exact. Iron Mountain is a famous data center that is regarded as one of the most secure facilities in the nation, and houses government and corporate data and millions of treasures such as the original negatives of classic photos like Rosa Parks on the bus, Albert Einstein and Marilyn Monroe, and hundreds of thousands of original films.

PTC was the first education institution to tour Iron Mountain. Thirty-two students from our Information Technology program participated and experienced, first-hand, the extreme infrastructure of a high-security environment. Dr. John Scarpino, Academic Chair, School of Information Systems and Technology, noted, "It was amazing seeing the students stunned at the possibilities of working in an environment like this. Seeing the faces of both the Instructor chaperones and students about this high tech environment was awesome."

Our students were excited to learn about the facility via a presentation and were even more eager to see it first-hand during the tour. Dr. Scarpino adds, “Iron Mountain gave us a great welcome. It was nice seeing our alumni working there, too.” Experiences like these help our students see the world of opportunity that waits for them after graduation, even if they go underground, as in this case, to do it.  Thank you to Iron Mountain for having us.
