PTC Pinning Ceremony - An Important Rite of Passage

April 09, 2014 -

The PTC School of Nursing  held their pinning ceremony yesterday to celebrate the graduation of 16 Practical Nursing graduates and 8 Associate of Science, Nursing  graduates.
The event was presided over by Dr. Lynette Jack, Chair of the School of Nursing.
This ceremony was particularly important as it marked the first graduation class of Associate in Science, Nursing students, a new program at PTC.
Eight nurses entered this program and Dr. Jack was particularly proud that all eight graduated.

“I am so pleased for these graduates” said Dr. Jack. “ They are knowledgeable and skilled with a dedication to patient safety and quality care.”
Graduates spoke of the importance of caring for patients and the value of lifelong learning. Many indicated a commitment to continuing their education to advance their careers.

The history of the nursing pinning ceremony dates back to the Crusades of the 12th Century when a group of knights, the Knights Hospitaller, tended to and cared for the injured and suffering crusaders. When new knights were brought into the Knights Order, they held a ceremony where each knight was given a Maltese cross that they wore on their arm.
Florence Nightingale continue the tradition in the 1860’s. She presented a Medal of Excellence to her outstanding nurses. Nurses celebrate Florence Nightingale in their ceremonies to this day.

The PTC pinning ceremony included  proud friends and family and the traditional awarding of pins.
