PTC Students Graduate to Cheers and Tossed Mortarboards

April 08, 2014 - Honors

April 7th was graduation day at PTC as 214 graduates walked the stage at Soldiers and Sailors Hall.

A capacity crowd of cheering parents, friends and family crowded the auditorium to watch as their favorite graduate received their diploma from the faculty.

President Greg DeFeo challenged the graduates with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi “Carefully watch your thoughts, for they become your words. Manage and watch your words, for they will become your actions. Consider and judge your actions, for they have become your habits. Acknowledge and watch your habits, for they shall become your values. Understand and embrace your values, for they become your destiny.”

A number of awards were given to outstanding students at the ceremony.
The winner of the JR McCartan award for the April 2014 graduating class was Nathan Kubrick.

Mark Scott, Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs introduced the Caliguiri awards to the audience. He explained, “In 1981, PTC created an award given to the top students in a graduating class. Other colleges and schools have valedictorians, but there was a desire to not only award academic achievement, but personal achievement and perseverance.”

The awards are named for Richard S. Caliguiri, former Mayor of Pittsburgh and a graduate from Pittsburgh Technical College in 1948 with a degree in Industrial Engineering.

Today the Richard S. Caliguiri Society boasts 646 members.

The award recognizes individuals that demonstrated success in academics, perseverance, professionalism, and leadership during their stay at PTC.

The Caliguiri Award winners for the April 2014 graduating class are:

Megan Dungee - Practical Nursing
Lynsi Kalish - Nursing
Perry Christy - Medical Assisting
Stephanie Bearer - Graphic Design
Juan Lopez - Multimedia Technologies
Ronny Pfrogner - Computer Aided Drafting
Alexander Mathews - Electronics Engineering Technology
Stephanie Bowser - Information Technology
Morgan Lovenduski - Business Administration
Vincenzo Merante - Hospitality Management Administration

As the graduates filed out the auditorium, many pictures were taken to capture the memories of this momentous day. You can view these pictures here.
